I interned with the sports department at KSAT-TV in San Antonio, Texas, during the summer of 2015.  KSAT broadcasts on Channel 12 and is the ABC affiliate for the San Antonio market.

During my internship I got to assist in KSAT’s coverage of the WNBA’s San Antonio Stars, including Training Camp, Media Day, pre-season and select regular season games.  In doing so, I chose which players to talk to after games and was usually the only one to ask questions after these games with cameras and reporters from KABB-TV, WOAI-TV, Spurs Sports & Entertainment and the San Antonio Express-News also present.  Afterward I edited the highlights and wrote the scripts too.

I assisted with feature stories for KSAT’s 30-minute sports show, Instant Replay, which airs on Sundays.  I wrote and edited highlights for the PGA, NASCAR, the Texas Rangers and Houston Astros and logged games during the NBA Finals, NBA Summer League and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Final.  I assisted the producer and anchors in writing the scripts for them and choosing plays for highlights to air on Instant Replay.

While Instant Replay was live, I alternated producing the show from the control room one week and managing audience polls and social media during the show the next.  Daniel Villanueva, the producer, would guide me in making the calls and who to make them to, whether that was the anchors or the show’s director while I was in the producer’s chair and would sometimes relay the results of the show’s web poll to me to insert them in the show scripts and graphics.  My last Sunday, I called the shots and cued our sports director who was live in Oxnard, California, at the Dallas Cowboys’ training camp.

While managing social media, I wrote and posted teases for the show’s People Poll over Facebook and Twitter, then started the poll,  kept it competitive to increase audience participation in the show and stopped the poll to show the live results on the air.  I also monitored the show’s web poll on KSAT.com and toward the end of the show relayed the results to Villanueva who put them in the script and on a graphic.

I also got to go out and cover a few other things like the Spurs’ Kyle Anderson teaching healthy cooking to a local Boys & Girls Club, LaMarcus Aldridge’s introductory press conference with the Spurs, a local boxer making his HBO debut and the University of Texas at San Antonio College of Engineering demonstrated a new kicking simulator and two of the students who worked on the project were kickers on the UTSA football team.  I filmed a stand-up and myself missing an easy chip-shot kick and put together a package which ran on the KSAT website.

I anchored sports and news briefs on the KSAT set, which can be seen in my work samples.  I produced a package profiling a local teen who writes for Sports Illustrated Kids – which can also be seen in my work samples, took pictures for a slideshow promoting a story about the renovation of the old Lone Star Beer brewery and 1-on-1 interview with Aldridge, and researched various things relevant to a show pertaining mostly toward NBA Free Agency but also WNBA, baseball, NASCAR, soccer and other various stats.
